'I will continue playing the role of opposition'

In a statement posted on his X account on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, the MP declared his commitment to upholding the government accountable by keeping checks and balances in governance.

“I will continue playing the role of opposition, keeping checks and balances on this defunct Government under the doctrine of separation of powers, checks and balances as was opined by Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède de Montesquieu in the 17th century,” Babu Owino stated.

Raila, Ruto in sync

Babu Owino’s sentiments come hot on the heels of opposition leader Raila Odinga announcing his agreement to engage in dialogue with President William Ruto. This dialogue aims to address the unrest among discontented youths demanding the president’s resignation.

President William Ruto has called for a six-day multi-sectorial forum aimed at fostering national dialogue following recent anti-government protests

The forum is set to begin on Monday, July 15, 2024.

Raila noted the importance of dialogue in resolving the current crisis plaguing the country.

“I am happy to confirm that we have had consultations and have agreed that a dialogue is the way forward out of the crisis that we are facing in the country,” Odinga stated.

“We have agreed that we give people an opportunity to be heard, to express themselves so that a lasting solution can be found.”

Raila said the goal is to create an inclusive platform where all voices can be heard, and constructive discussions can take place to address the nation’s challenges.

The multi-sectorial forum is expected to bring together a group of stakeholders from various sectors of society, including political leaders, civil society organizations, the youth and representatives to find a lasting solution to the issues affecting the country.

The opposition leader announced that attendees of the forum are expected to bear their own costs.
