Babu Owino contributes Ksh200,000 towards Rex’s burial

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino stands in solidarity with the family of Rex Kanyike Maasai who succumbed to gunshot injuries on Thursday, June 21, 2024.

In a statement, Babu who joined the parents of the deceased at the City Mortuary ahead of the post-mortem disclosed that he has contributed Ksh 200,000 to help give a befitting send-off of the slain protester.

The youthful legislature further stated that it’s heartbreaking to see parents in anguish following the brutal murder.

“I joined the family of the late Rex Kanyike Maasai at the City Mortuary ahead of the post-mortem. I gave a contribution of Ksh 200,000 to Rex’s parents to assist in funeral arrangements, “Babu Owino said.

“I am pained to the deepest depths of my heart to see parents in anguish following this unspeakable tragedy.”

Babu Owino further appealed to Kenyans to financially support the family of the deceased adding that brutal murder is a terrible price to pay while exercising your democratic rights.

“I call upon Kenyans to stand with the family of this fallen hero at this difficult time through their pay bill and give whatever little they can,” he said.

“To die at the prime of one’s life, fighting for a future that has been brutally snatched away by the Oppressor, is a terrible price to pay.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MP disclosed that he will make sure Rex finds justice.

“We will make sure your sacrifice is not in vain Friend. Go well and pass our regards to our founding fathers, let them know the struggle lives on!” he revealed.

Rex’s death

The mother of  Rex Kanyike, Jillian Munyau, on Friday, June 21, 2024, painfully narrates how her son lost his life from a police bullet.

Speaking in an interview with a local TV station, Jillian said that she was called on Thursday, June 20, 2024, by her son’s friend informing her that Rex was shot in the left leg and was taken to the nearest clinic in town.

Jillian said that upon arrival she found her son had already died.

“Nilipigiwa simu jana jioni mwendo wa saa moja nikaambiwa Rex ameshotiwa kwa muguu on the left side na walimupeleka kwa a nearest clinic hapo Archives innaitwa Bliss so kutoka nyamavilla kufika town nikapata hayuko,”she narrated.

She further refuted claims that her son was protesting adding that the deceased was shot while running after the police loped teargas canister.

“Rafiki take ndio alinipigia simu kutumia simu yake akaniambia wakati wametoka kazini walikuwa wanaenda mahali town wakaambiana incase of anything tukutane Afya Center walipokuwa wamesimama karibu na Archives kulitupwa teargas iyo direction walikiambia ndio akashotiwa,“she said.

“After police kutoka rafiki yake mmoja alirudi nyuma kuangalia ako aje akapata amebleed kabisa ndio rafiki yake akaomba usaidizi kwa mpitanjia  police akapita wakamewambia awasidie wampeleke hospital kwa sababu alikuwa bado hai police akawaambia wacha akufe.”
