An angry mob set ablaze a vehicle that knocked down a boda boda operator along the Thika superhighway in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
The 11.00 am accident occurred when the driver of the Toyota Harrier was overtaking another vehicle at the Ruiru Bridge and rammed into the oncoming motorcycle causing the rider to plunge several metres and land into the highway below.
Ruiru police commander Alex Shikondi confirmed the unfortunate incident saying the driver of the vehicle fled the scene after the incident.
The rider was rescued and rushed to the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital in serious condition.
Consequently, irate boda boda operators set the vehicle, which bore Ugandan registration numbers, on fire reducing it to a shell.
Shikondi condemned the incident saying members of the public should not take the law into their own hands, he added that the illegal act amounted to destroying evidence.
“Burning the vehicle does not help anyone since we cannot ascertain whether it had insurance cover so that the injured person can be compensated. We are left without any evidence,” the police commander said.
A young man at the scene said the incident should not be confused with Gen-Z demonstrations.
What remained of the car was later towed to the Ruiru police station.
