Amisi mourns Kisumu-Kakamega highway crash victims, urges road discipline

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has sent his condolences to the families of the people who perished in the Kisumu–Kakamega Highway crash, while calling for heightened road discipline to avert similar tragedies.

In a statement posted on his X account on Friday, August 8, 2025, Amisi described the accident, which occurred at the Coptic roundabout, as a tragic loss that highlights the importance of caution on the roads.

The legislator urged road users to exercise patience and observe traffic laws, stressing that safe driving could save lives.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the 21 Kenyans who lost their lives in the tragic accident at Coptic roundabout along the Kisumu–Kakamega road,” he said.

“I urge all road users to exercise utmost caution, obey traffic regulations, and uphold patience and vigilance, for every journey we make, a life depends on it,” he added.

Amisi also expressed hope for the injured, offering prayers for their recovery.

“May the Almighty grant their souls eternal rest and comfort to their loved ones during this time of grief. I wish the injured a swift and complete recovery,” he stated.

Kisumu road crash details

According to a Facebook statement posted on August 8, 2025, by the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), which received the victims of the crash, at least 21 lives were lost, and 21 others were injured.

The bus involved was carrying 61 family members returning from a burial in Nyahera, located in Kisumu West sub-county, and was headed to Nyakach.

“Staff at JOOTRH moved swiftly this evening to receive and save the lives of survivors from a tragic road accident that occurred at the Coptic roundabout area along the Kisumu-Kakamega road,” the hospital said.

The hospital further confirmed that 19 bodies were brought in directly from the crash site, while two additional victims, including a child, died while receiving treatment.

“Twenty-one of the occupants are currently stable and receiving treatment at the hospital’s Emergency and Accident Unit,” the hospital added.

Ruto’s condolences

In a related statement issued on the night of August 8, 2025, President William Ruto directed traffic enforcement officers to intensify road safety operations following the fatal accident.

“Our prayers are with the victims of the terrible accident that occurred tonight on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway. May the Almighty give strength to the families to bear with the loss. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” Ruto stated.

He also called for a comprehensive crackdown on all traffic violations to ensure safety on Kenyan roads.

“We ask traffic enforcers to act swiftly to bring to book those responsible for any acts of negligence leading to the accident and address all traffic violations to ensure road safety across the country,” Ruto wrote.
