The President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Alice Ruhweza, has reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s agricultural transformation and food security efforts.

Speaking during a courtesy call on Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe at Kilimo House in Nairobi on Friday, July 25, 2025, Ruhweza emphasised AGRA’s nearly 20-year presence in Kenya and its dedication to aligning with national priorities.

Accompanied by AGRA’s Director of Policy and State Capability, Boaz Blackie Keizire, and Kenya Country Director, John Macharia,  Ruhweza outlined AGRA’s key investments, including Ksh116 million to support seed policy implementation and facilitate the country’s transition to an e-voucher system for agricultural subsidies.

She also announced Kenya’s inclusion in a new AGRA youth-focused program aimed at creating jobs across the agricultural value chain, as well as ongoing support for training Kenyan seed breeders at master’s and PhD levels.

In a statement, the Ministry of Agriculture revealed that CS Kagwe outlined plans to revamp the agriculture sector through structural reforms, including the review of emergency food security policies, integration of ICT for e-governance and farmer support, fertiliser and seed insurance, and training through revived agricultural colleges and 4K clubs.

He also emphasised the need to reduce food imports by boosting local production of rice, wheat, palm oil, and yellow maize.

“The meeting also touched on warehousing, extension services, devolution policy, and better coordination of donor-funded programs to avoid duplication,” read the statement in part.

Additionally, AGRA pledged to support Kenya’s resilience-building agenda, helping farmers “bounce back better” amid climate and market shocks.

The discussions come as Kenya explores expanding subsidised inputs to large-scale farmers and turning arid northern regions productive through investments in water infrastructure.

AGRA

The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is mandated to catalyse and sustain inclusive agricultural transformation across the continent, with a focus on increasing the productivity and incomes of smallholder farmers in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Its work is centred around strengthening food systems by improving access to quality inputs such as improved seeds and fertilisers, supporting the development of climate-resilient crop varieties, and advancing modern farming techniques to boost yields.

AGRA also plays a crucial role in building functional markets and value chains that connect farmers to agribusinesses and consumers, thereby ensuring that increased productivity translates into real economic benefits.
