Wiper MCA Francis Mutuku arrested
By username, July 20, 2023The first Makueni County Assembly Majority leader Francis Mutuku Musso has been arrested, an incident locals suspect is linked to his involvement in ongoing anti-government protests.
The Kilili/Kalamba ward representative is said to have been arrested at his home in Kilili village on Thursday, July 20, 2023.
Mutuku’s arrest was confirmed by Makueni County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu, who said the local leadership is yet to confirm the reason behind his arrest.
“Mutuku has been arrested from his rural home but we have not yet established the exact reasons why he has been arrested,” Mbilu said.
The MCA is being held at Kola Police Station pending his arraignment in court.
Mutuku was elected to the third Makueni Assembly on a Wiper ticket for the second time in the 2022 general elections.
He was the majority leader in the first Makueni County assembly after being elected by the majority members of the Wiper party in 2013.
While he was the majority leader, the assembly fell out with the former governor Kivutha Kibwana in the first year of their tenure which led to Kibwana’s impeachment.
The former governor was impeached in his first term where some 35 MCA’s largely from the Wiper party voted in favour of the impeachment and 10 members drawn from Muungano Party which the governor was elected on opposed the motion.
Mutuku was later ordered by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to resign from his post as the leader of the majority because of the wrangles which had also led to ousting of the then Chief Whip Bensley Mathuku, leading to disunity in the Wiper party.
Mutuku and other members of Makueni County assembly lost in the 2017 general elections except one for Kathonzweni Francis Mutungi, who was the only re-elected MCA.
Musso bounced back to the assembly in the last 2022 general election and he is now the majority deputy leader in the third county assembly of Makueni.
