Rift Valley Regional Commander Maalim Mohamed has asked tourists and those who have been planning to travel to Turkana but have avoided the area due to insecurity issues to worry no more.
According to Maalim, the National Police Service (NPS) has managed to arrest the leaders of the gang that has been terrorising people along the Kainuk-KWS area.
“Let them not be worried anymore because they will now freely move as the National Police Service has begun unrelenting vigilance to ensure peace and security are maintained at all times in the area. We are constantly on the lookout for criminals who have in the past attacked people,” Maalim said.
Police in Turkana make arrests
On Saturday, July 2, 2022 police officers from Kainuk Police Station and RDU Kakong led by Salah Mohamed managed to arrest four people in a bush in the KWS area and recovered two AK 47 riffles and nine rounds of ammunition.
He assured residents that the arrested suspects will face the law and urged relevant authorities to join hands in ensuring justice is served.
Maalim noted that police will interrogate the suspects to get more information about the gang.
“If we wanted to kill and finish them we would but we want to interrogate them to get more information from them. We will follow due process and if we get them to court, let’s get support from all those who will be involved so that this may be a lesson to those remaining in the area,” Maalim stated.
Maalin assured the residents that the government is doing everything possible to ensure that all illegal firearms in the area are recovered.
He said the government will soon impose a dusk to dawn curfew in the area to expedite the process.
“We have plans that after the gang is done away with, we will impose the dusk to dawn curfew to ensure that the weapons are got rid of, and this is probably next week,” he added.
Since the start of the year, more than 18 people including passengers have been attacked on the road with many sustaining serious gunshot wounds.
