Detectives in Nairobi have apprehended four suspects believed to be involved in a series of mobile phone thefts plaguing the city.

In an official statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) noted that the arrest was a significant blow to a mobile theft syndicate that has been causing concern within the city giving details of the burst.

The operation, led by detectives from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, culminated in the arrest of two individuals from neighbouring Uganda, Malumasi Aisha and Agaba Anestus Majuni, along with Sarah Njeri and her sister, Mary Wangui, who were caught red-handed within CBD.

“Four suspects linked with the rampant disappearance of mobile phones within the City were yesterday arrested by detectives. Malumasi Aisha and Agaba Anestus Majuni both from neighboring Uganda were arrested alongside Sarah Njeri and her sister Mary Wangui in an intelligence-led operation conducted by detectives within the busy Nairobi Central Business District,” the statement read in part.

The arrest of Malumasi Aisha, who was found in possession of a parcel containing 13 smartphones believed to be destined for the black market in Uganda, marked a pivotal moment in the operation.

Subsequently, Malumasi cooperated with the investigators, leading them to shop E17 located at Munyu Business Centre, where Sarah Wangari and Mary Wangui were receiving other stolen mobile phones.

“Malumasi, who was the first to be cornered, was found with a parcel of 13 smartphones believed to be destined for the black market in Uganda. She then led the sleuths to shop E17 located at Munyu Business Centre, where her accomplices Sarah Wangari and Mary Wangui were busy receiving other stolen mobile phones,” the statement stated.

An interrogation of the suspects prompted them to reveal a fourth individual, Agaba Majuni, who was discovered waiting for a package meant for transport to Uganda at the Simba Coach bus station.
