Kenya Power cuts off power supply at MP Mbai’s home, business premises

Kenya Power has cut off power supply at Kitui East Member of Parliament (MP) Nimrod Mbai’s rural home in Zombe area, Kitui county.

The move came barely four days after he allegedly assaulted a KPLC engineer in Kitengela, Kajiado county.

The power supply at the lawmaker’s home was disconnected after the utility’s engineers led by Kenya Power Regional Manager John Wanyoike inspected and discovered that the power connection to the MP’s home was done illegally.

“We established that the power meters at his place belong to the county government and not Kenya Power. We suspect they were installed on street lights,” he stated.

Witnesses at the MP’s Zombe market reported that the utility’s staff also cut off power at his business premises causing a commotion.

According to a junior staff who spoke to a local publication on condition of anonymity stated that Mbai has had several squabbles with the utility firm and whenever his power was cut he would resort to other means of reconnecting the power supply.

“It is not the first time we have disconnected the power supply at Mbai’s home but every time we took action, he used unorthodox means to reconnect the supply,” he said.

The lawmaker was on Monday, July 3, 2023, captured on camera assaulting a Kenya Power officer disconnecting power from his home. The MP had also threatened to shoot the utility’s engineer.

“You want to cut power to my children. I am a man, I can’t allow that,” Mbai was heard shouting in the clip.
