5 police officers injured in Mandera Al-Shabaab attack

Five police officers sustained serious injuries after being attacked by suspected members of the terror group Al-Shabaab in Bamba Ola, Elwak Mandera County, on Thursday, August 4, 2022.

The joint patrol security team comprised of Border Patrol Unit, Anti-Stock Theft Unit, Critical Infrastructure Police Unit, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and general duty officers were on regular patrols when they were sprayed with bullets by the suspected militia group.

Police said the land cruiser and lorry the officers were using were partly destroyed during the Thursday night incident.

The officers responded effectively and repulsed the attackers.

“The team which was on patrol was led by the Sub-County Police Commander for Mandera central was sprayed with bullets by suspected al-Shabaab militias. Five officers were injured during the attack,” read part of the police report.

The five victims were all treated at the Elwak sub-county referral hospital and discharged in fair condition.

A pistol belonging to one of the officers was damaged during the confrontation.

“The Pistol grip and Magazine of one of the Constables was shot and destroyed. The rear screen of the cruiser was also shattered and the exhaust pipe was damaged. The ASTU lorry was hit twice,” a police report seen by K24 Digital reads in part.

The officers managed to repulse the attackers with the help of officers from the Kenya Defence Forces and General Service Unit (GSU).

Al-Shabaab raids Elram camp in Mandera

On Monday, August 1, 2022, Anti-Stock-Theft Units officers (ASTU) were also injured during an attack at the Elram camp in Kotulu Mandera County.

The attack was staged by suspected Al-Shabaab militia who were armed with six high explosive bombs and machine guns.

The three included a deputy OCS and two police constables.

Security teams in the county are on high alert following the increase of attacks in the area.
