Nairobi Woman Representative hopeful Millicent Omanga is under probe over alleged graft links, it has emerged.

The proprietor of Milways Enterprises, a company dealing in imported furniture and other household items, Nation Africa reports is on the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) radar over a suspicious Ksh200 million tender awarded by Kenya Prisons Service.

The 40-year-old politician is among a number of persons facing prosecutions over links with several companies said to have bagged tenders worth Ksh4.8 billion awarded irregularly by the department that falls under the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government.

Omanga’s firm which operates from Development Towers on Biashara Street, Nairobi, is said to have won a tender to supply gun slings to the Kenya Prisons Service in 2019.

However, the award of the tender coincided with a probe by the anti-graft body on several government institutions linked to dubious dealings.

EACC flagged the transactions, blocking the Kenya Prisons Service from releasing any funds to Milways and other beneficiaries.

In its investigations, the authority says there was no assurance the companies would deliver the weapons and other security equipment procured. Most of the firms did not meet crucial requirements for the award of the tenders like submission of bank and performance guarantees.

Besides the irregularities, the contract awarded to Milways is said to have been redundant since guns are fitted with slings during manufacturing.

Reports indicate that Milways was to receive Ksh200 million.

Already, reports indicate, that Kenya Prisons Service had agreed to release 80 percent of the money to suppliers by the time EACC flagged the contracts. This would have seen Milways receive Ksh160 million.

Persons targeted in the probe, nearing completion, include former officials of the Kenya Prison Service implicated in alleged graft.

Omanga founded Milyways at the age of 27.

The nominated senator is on record saying the company propelled her to her financial success.

She is seeking the Woman rep seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.
