A video has surfaced online showing a free-roaming lioness in Rongai days after the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) gave an advisory about lions on the loose.

In the short closed-circuit television (CCTV) video, a lioness arrives at the premise along Ongata-Rongai’s Pasha Drive in Maasai Lodge before jumping on the perimeter fence.

The lioness then takes a cursory glance at the home before hastily jumping down to attack what appears to be a black dog which it carries in his mouth and casually walks away into the darkness.

KWS lion notice

This comes just days after the Kenya Wildlife Service gave out a notice warning residents in Langata about lions that were supposedly sighted in the area.

While the wildlife body is yet to give an update on the notice, fresh panic is building up in Ongata-Rongai which is getting notoriety with stray lions.

Last year, Rongai community policing officer Jasper Mogaka warned residents that a stray lion had been seen around Kimani Road in Laiser Hill around Thorn Tree.

“Locals, especially school-going children should be very careful while accessing these areas,” Mogaka stated.

This came just days after another sickly lion had been spotted in Rongai, adding to the growing list of incidents involving human-wildlife conflict.

Hyena attack

In February, a stray hyena attacked and seriously injured two Multimedia University students along Rongai’s ole Kasasi area.

During the rescue mission conducted by the KWS special unit for escaped wildlife, human remains of an individual were retrieved.

Unfortunately, another team of PAMU remaining on patrol discovered part of human remains at the scene, which were taken by the police. The remains have been confirmed, and the family has been notified,” the KWS statement said.

Students at the university would later take to the streets to protest the human-wildlife conflict that has become rampant near the school.
