The County Government of Kajiado has banned hawking activities in Kitengela town.

The Governor Joseph Ole Lenku-led administration says the move is aimed at restoring order in the populous town, which was recently elevated to a municipality.

Over 700 hawkers eke a living by selling their wares along the town’s feeder roads.

Some feeder roads have totally been impassable after being reduced to hawkers operating points.

Motorists have time to time decried the menace caused by the hawkers who continue to dominate the streets.

The adamant hawkers have been confronting motorists saying they pay to operate in the streets.

Apparently, the traders part with a Ksh30 fee on a daily basis to operate in the town.

The number of county askaris has been increased in the town to keep the hawkers off the streets.

Kitengela municipality

The elevation of the town to a municipality is expected to come with a bag of goodies in terms of infrastructure, water and sewerage system.

Governor Lenku is on record saying that his government is committed to ensuring proper planning in towns to curb unstructured business operations.

“I am committed to facilitating a face-lift to our towns. A well-planned town will attract investors and business partners,” he said.

The ban will remain in force even on Sundays, the official market day in the town.
