Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi now says the ultimate source of happiness is money.

His discovery comes months after he completed a one-year degree course in happiness studies from the Happiness Studies Academy in the United States.

In a statement shared on his Facebook account, Kiraitu noted the significance of money in achieving happiness.

“Money is the foundation of happiness. It is a symbol not only of value but also of freedom, abundance, and a good life,” the former county chief stated.

According to Kiraitu, money facilitates the pursuit of hobbies, travel, holidays, and experiences that enhance the quality of life.

He further stressed that it’s not good to romanticise poverty, asserting that everyone has the fundamental right to live a dignified, rich, prosperous, and happy life.

“We should not glorify or romanticise poverty. Everyone has a fundamental right to live a dignified, rich, prosperous and happy life. In a nutshell, money can buy happiness. The Nkubu lecture was a success. The happiness revolution is well on course,” Kiraitu affirmed.

Kiraitu graduates with Degree in Happiness

On his graduation day in November 2023, Murungi noted that he was now equipped to spearhead happiness across Kenya.

“I am happy to announce that I successfully completed a one-year degree course in happiness studies from the Happiness Studies Academy and graduated. I am now fully equipped to spearhead the happiness revolution in my motherland,” he wrote.

Founded by ‘positive psychology expert’ Tal Ben-Shahar, the Happiness Studies Academy based in New York, USA focuses on leading the happiness revolution by educating leaders who are dedicated to personal, interpersonal, and communal flourishing.

“To realize our mission, we at HSA take a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to teaching happiness—first in the way we define happiness, and second in the way we teach it. We define happiness as the experience of whole-person wellbeing, or in short, the experience of whole-being,” a statement on the institution’s website reads in parts.
