The National Police Service (NPS) has warned the public regarding several counterfeit social media accounts posing as the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Douglas Kanja.

In a statement on Wednesday, March 20, NPS said these imposter accounts are managed by criminals aiming at deceiving unsuspecting Kenyans.

“Disclaimer…!!! We wish to caution the public against interacting with multiple fake accounts purporting to belong to the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service, Mr Douglas Kanja,” NPS cautioned.

Adding;

“The existing accounts are maintained by imposters with criminal intent to defraud unsuspecting Kenyans.”

The public was urged to exercise caution and vigilance, treating any content originating from these fraudulent accounts as both malicious and false.

Additionally, NPS clarified that the real DIG Kanja does not operate any social media accounts.

NPS’ update comes in the wake of alarming activities perpetrated by one of these accounts.

Among them was the dissemination of a misleading job advertisement, urging Kenyan youths seeking jobs to apply for positions within the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Fake accounts impersonating Koome

This isn’t the first time fraudulent accounts have impersonated a police official.

In August 2023, NPS said unscrupulous individuals were impersonating the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on social media to defraud Kenyans.

NPS made it clear that the IG did not have any social media account and as such any social media profiles purporting to be linked to Koome were fake and should be treated with scepticism.

“Disclaimer…!!!🚨 The National Police Service wishes to caution the public against interacting with this fake account purporting to belong to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Japhet Koome,” the Police said in a statement.

“This account is maintained by unscrupulous imposters with criminal intent to defraud unsuspecting Kenyans and the general public. Please note that the Inspector General of Police does not operate any social media account,” the statement added.
