A drunk and armed Buruburu police officer who was on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, captured in a video in full uniform staggering along the road has died by suicide – police have confirmed.

The body of Constable Harrison Mugo was on Thursday morning found hanging inside an old police canteen that got burnt down a few years ago.

The station’s groundsman Salim Onteri while on normal duties near the canteen spotted the body hanging from the rafters and reported the matter to the station commander.

“The body had no visible physical injuries and no suicide note was found. The deceased officer was the one whose clip went viral yesterday (Wednesday) after he was filmed being drunk and disorderly while in police uniform and disciplinary action had been taken against him,” a police report seen by K24 Digital reads.

Police officer in drunken stupor

In the viral video, the late officer was seen walking back to the station armed with an AK47 assault rifle. At one point, he fell down and was helped to get up by two members of the public. The two are then seen carrying him to a matatu parked beside the road.

A few hours after the video went viral, the NPS spokesperson Bruno Shioso condemned the drunk officer and termed the behaviour unbecoming, unacceptable, and unprofessional.

“This is to assure the public that this behaviour is unbecoming, unacceptable, and unprofessional. NPS hence condemns it in the strongest terms possible. A uniformed police officer is a visible representation and face of government and is required to remain extremely disciplined and professional while on duty and off duty,” NPS said.

“As NPS, we hold our officers accountable with regard to matters of discipline, decorum, and conduct to ensure efficient and effective service provision to the public,” he added.
