Zech Obiero tastes defeat on first start with Tranmere Rovers

Kenyan prospect Zech Obiero was handed a starting berth for his Tranmere debut as the club’s dismal run extended with a 2-1 loss to Gillingham on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

Obiero, on loan from Leyton Orient, was deployed in an offensive midfield position for his debut alongside Stephan Negru and Marko Marosi, who also made their debuts for the Prenton Park club.

Ronan Hale claimed the match plaudits with his double at either end of the break, securing maximum points for the home team.

Tranmere struggles

The loss piled more pressure on Rovers, who are placed 17th in the 24-team league with 32 points from 30 matches.

The 21-year-old midfielder joined the League Two outfit on loan from League One club Leyton Orient, with the agreement covering the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign. The move aims to give Obiero increased exposure to senior football as he continues to develop within the English football system.

The deal with Tranmere Rovers will last until Sunday, May 31, 2026, after which Obiero will return to his parent club.

Obiero’s appreciation

Speaking on Saturday, February 7, 2026, before the match, Obiero thanked Kenyans for their support of Europe-based stars as he urged them to also follow the proceedings at the club.

”I’m really grateful for the support back home in Kenya. I’m really excited to be out there with the boys on Saturday, and hopefully we get the win,” Obiero said.

During his stint with the Os, the central midfielder made eight appearances for Leyton Orient, gradually earning opportunities at the first-team level after rising through the club’s youth structure.

Stint at Orient

Obiero joined Orient’s academy at just 14 years old after leaving Tottenham Hotspur and went on to sign his first professional contract in 2022. Since then, he has gained valuable match experience during loan spells at non-League sides Cheshunt and Chelmsford City.

He also has call-ups to the Kenya U20 team, whom he trained with before the start of the 2025 U20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). He, however, failed to make the cut in Salim Babu’s final squad for the continental games.
