Zech Obiero opens up on crazy support from Kenyans after signing for English side
By Luke Oluoch, March 14, 2026Harambee Stars call-up Zech Obiero has hailed the outpouring of messages of love and support from Kenyan fans, describing how the gesture helped him settle in at his new club.
In an interview with his new club Tranmere Rovers, the prodigy, who is among the debutant call-ups in the Kenya squad for the FIFA Series friendlies, revealed how such a gesture impressed the players and imparted them with the needed motivation.
“Kenyans love football: they are crazy about it and have made it a point to support one of their own wherever he goes,” he said.

Obiero particularly highlighted the endearing solidarity expressed by Kenyan fans online when he switched clubs in Europe at the start of the year when he left Leyton Orient on loan to join League side Rovers.
Welcoming
“The support flooding Twitter (X) really helped me and gave me a boost, as well as the fans here when I came, who really welcomed the Kenyan fans. To see that support and buzz is important; I hope it can continue here, and I really hope I can reciprocate it on the pitch,” he added.
After initially earning a call-up to represent Kenya U20, Junior Stars, in the African Cup of Nations in 2025, the 21-year-old now seeks to earn his first appearance for Kenya, albeit with the senior team in the FIFA Series.
He joined a list of foreign stars, including Wrexham defender Zak Vyner, in the 23-man squad unveiled by Benni McCarthy on Friday, March 13, 2026, for the international assignment.

His sentiments mirror his first remarks upon signing for Rovers on Saturday, February 7, 2026, when he expressed gratitude to Kenyans for showing him great support following his transfer to English League Two side Tranmere Rovers.
Grateful
”I’m really grateful for the support back home in Kenya. I’m really excited to be out there with the boys on Saturday, and hopefully we get the win,” Obiero told the club’s X account.
Obiero hails from a family with a rich footballing history, with his brother Micah Obiero also a professional player in England. The siblings are sons of former Kenyan player Henry Obiero.
