Xabi Alonso appointed Chelsea manager
By Joel Masibo, May 17, 2026Premier League side Chelsea Football Club has announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed to a four‑year contract at Stamford Bridge.
In a confirmation statement on Sunday, May 17, 2026, the club described Alonso as a figure with experience in the coaching industry.
”One of the most respected figures in the modern game, Alonso arrives at Chelsea having already experienced coaching at the highest level of European football with Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the German club to the first league title in their history.” The statement said in part.
Rosenior sacked!
The development unfolds shortly after Chelsea parted ways with with head Coach Liam Rosenior following a string of poor results at the club in April 2026.

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the club extended sincere thanks to Liam and his coaching team for the dedication and commitment they showed throughout their time at Stamford Bridge.
The club added that since taking over midway through the campaign, Rosenior carried out his duties with strong professionalism and respect for the role.
Chelsea further said that although this outcome was not reached easily, the club believes recent match results and overall displays have not met the expected level, especially at such an important stage of the season.
”Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season. This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future,” the statement said in part.

Following Rosenior’s sacking, Calum McFarlane stepped in as interim head coach, supported by the current backroom staff. His latest assignments on the touchline came on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the FA Cup final where the Blues lost 1-0 to Manchester City at the Wembley Stadium.
