World’s biggest stadium construction update: 135,000-seat mega project begins to take shape
By William Muthama, September 26, 2026Construction of the 135,000-seat VinFast-Trống Đồng Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam, has entered a new phase, with massive support towers rising at the site as work continues on the ambitious project.
The stadium, located in Thuong Phuc in southern Hanoi, is the centrepiece of the Hùng Vương International Sports Complex and covers about 73.3 hectares.
Recent images from the construction site show a series of giant concrete towers rising nearly 80 metres above the stadium, marking progress towards the installation of its retractable roof. Vietnamese reports said the towers have emerged after nearly nine months of construction.
The project is designed to accommodate 135,000 spectators and is being developed to FIFA standards, with an automatically retractable roof among its major features.
Stadium takes shape
The stadium is being developed as the centrepiece of the more than 400-hectare Hùng Vương International Sports Complex, a wider sports, cultural and entertainment development in southern Hanoi.
The complex is being planned to accommodate major international sporting and cultural events, with facilities designed around standards for competitions such as the Asian Games, Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup.
The stadium itself has already taken shape, with work progressing on its four grandstands. Recent construction updates show the massive scale of the structure becoming increasingly visible.
Retractable roof next
The next major stage will be the construction of the stadium’s retractable roof.\
A retractable roof is a roof that can open and close, allowing the stadium to host events in an open-air setting or under cover. When closed, it can protect spectators and players from rain and strong sunlight.
Project information indicates that the reinforced concrete structure is expected to be completed by December 2026, after which work will shift towards the retractable dome and other technical systems. The roof is targeted for completion around May 2027.
The stadium is expected to be completed in 2027, with July 2027 cited as the target in project updates.
A 135,000-seat giant
When completed, the VinFast-Trống Đồng Stadium will have a planned capacity of 135,000 seats, making it one of the largest stadiums ever built.
Vingroup officially announced the VinFast name for the stadium in July 2026, replacing earlier names including Trống Đồng and Hùng Vương.
The company describes the venue as the world’s largest stadium by planned capacity, while other reporting has described it as the world’s largest football stadium under construction.
The project is also being designed with advanced technology and energy-saving features, adding to its ambition to become a major sports and entertainment venue in Vietnam.
