World Cup: What managers said ahead Germany and Côte d’Ivoire Group E cracker

By , June 20, 2026

Germany will face Côte d’Ivoire in a key Group E encounter at Toronto Stadium on Saturday, June 20, 2026, with both nations aiming to secure an early place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout rounds.

The match marks the first-ever World Cup meeting between the European giants and the African representatives. Both sides began their campaigns on a winning note and know that another victory would leave them in a strong position to advance to the Round of 32.

Germany enter the contest brimming with confidence after dismantling Curaçao 7-1 in their opening fixture. Côte d’Ivoire also made an impressive start, edging Ecuador 1-0 to register their first-ever World Cup triumph against South American opposition.

Coaches and Players Speak

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann suggested major changes are unlikely following his side’s emphatic opening victory.

“There’s no obvious reason for me to change the starting eleven. But we’ll sleep on it first. We won’t overhaul our approach completely, there will only be a few tweaks to prevent the odd turnover and to be well positioned when it comes to guarding against counter-attacks. We spent a session and a half working on that, and the lads did a really good job. “In World Cup qualifying and at the Africa Cup of Nations, Côte d’Ivoire always lined up in a different system. So we don’t know exactly what to expect. We’ve prepared for a variety of scenarios. They are physically very strong, which could cause us problems. Their pace and their quality in one-on-one situations are their biggest strengths.”

German defender Jonathan Tah admitted the fixture carries extra personal significance.

“[Playing against the country where my father was born] will be more special for me than any other match. But aside from that, I try to focus more on our goals during this World Cup.”

On the opposing side, Côte d’Ivoire coach Emerse Fae said his team’s opening victory has boosted confidence but insisted their ambitions remain unchanged.

“It has helped that we won the first match, it has given us a piece of mind. We have come here to beat Germany and to qualify for the round of 32. Our clear goal is to go back to the basecamp in Philadelphia with six points and the assurance that we’ll finish top of the group. We have a team that has been working together for two and a half years and we’ll do everything the same as in the past. Nothing changes just because the opponent is Germany.”

Côte d’Ivoire forward Yan Diomande emphasized the squad’s determination to leave a lasting legacy at the tournament.

“We want to win every match; we want to make our mark on history and that’s what we’re all trying to do together.”

Stakes high in Toronto

With both teams level on three points after their opening matches, Saturday’s clash could determine who takes control of Group E. Germany will rely on their attacking firepower after producing one of the most dominant performances of the tournament so far, while Côte d’Ivoire will seek another upset as they continue their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages.

Toronto Stadium, which was originally constructed for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007, is one of Canada’s host venues for the 2026 tournament and will stage several group-stage matches in addition to a Round of 32 fixture.
