World Cup: France legend Barthes tops clean sheet, as Neuer breaks appearance record
Legendary World Cup-winning goalkeeper Fabien Barthez of France and Peter Shilton of England are the custodians with the most clean sheets in the history of the World Cup. Meanwhile, Germany’s Manuel Neuer became the goalkeeper with the most World Cup appearances during the 2026 tournament.
The Die Manschafft veteran Neuer contested his 21st World Cup match in the USA against the Ivory Coast on Saturday, June 20, 2026, overtaking France’s Hugo Lloris, who previously held the record with 20 appearances.
The MLS-based keeper with the Los Angeles Galaxy had originally risen to the top of the charts by surpassing Germany’s Sepp Maier and Brazil’s Claudio Taffarel, who both have 18 appearances on the global stage.
The duo has since been joined by Uruguayan veteran Fernando Muslera, who marked his 18th game in a 2-2 draw against Cape Verde. Others on the appearance list include England’s Peter Shilton, Italy’s Dino Zoff, and Fabien Barthez, who all finished their careers with 17 World Cup appearances.

When it comes to clean sheets, Shilton, the legendary England goalie of the 1980s, recorded 10 shutouts in his 17 appearances for the Three Lions. Shilton is tied for the record with former Manchester United goalie Barthez, who boasts the same number of clean sheets across 17 appearances in three separate tournaments.
Further down the list, Jan Jongbloed of the Netherlands, who appeared in the 1974 and 1978 editions, kept five clean sheets.
Brazil’s Emerson Leão sits in third and fourth for efficiency, boasting 8 clean sheets across his tournament appearances.
Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois also climbed the rankings, joining the tier of custodians with 8 World Cup clean sheets. The Real Madrid keeper made several outstanding saves as Belgium battled to a 0-0 draw against Iran to remain in contention for a place in the knockout rounds following two consecutive draws in their opening group games.
Courtois’s latest shutout was his first of the 2026 tournament, where he is representing the remnants of Belgium’s Golden Generation in his fourth career World Cup.
