World Cup: Egypt grab important point in entertaining clash against Belgium

Hours after Cabo Verde stunned heavyweights Spain by forcing a barren draw, Egypt also made the African continent proud by grabbing an important point against Belgium in the FIFA World Cup Group G clash on Monday, June 15, 2026.
Egypt broke the deadlock after birthday boy Mohammed Salah carefully scripted a pass which Emam Ashour topped with a fine first goal.
The Ah Ahly midfielder took one touch to set it up and swept a second through the legs of Thomas Meunier and past a diving Thibaut Courtois to send Egypt to the break with a slender lead.
Before this Group G opener, the Pharaohs had only ever led a World Cup match for 29 minutes, never tasted victory and only kept a lone clean sheet.

However, Egypt’s dream of grabbing the maximum points was cut short after Romelu Lukaku strode into the box to meet a Meunier cross, with his presence leading Mohamed Hany to poke it past his keeper Mostafa Shoubir.
That was exactly seconds after Lukaku was introduced in the second half.

Egypt and Belgium will be keen to see how Iran and New Zealand fare in their match.
Cabo Verde stunning Spain
Earlier, 40-year-old goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Dias, famously known as Vozinha, produced a man-of-the-match performance to help FIFA World Cup debutants Cabo Verde settle for a 0-0 draw with global heavyweights Spain.
Vozinha was busy between the sticks, producing some extraordinary saves to give Cabo Verde a historic performance on Monday, June 15, 2026.

Vozinha went on to become a global sensation, gaining hundreds of Instagram followers within minutes.
