Top 10 teams that have reached the most World Cup semi-finals

Germany continue to stand alone as the most successful nation when it comes to reaching the FIFA World Cup semi-finals, with an unmatched 12 appearances in the last four of the tournament.
The latest FIFA rankings of World Cup semi-final appearances place Germany at the top, well ahead of Brazil and France, who are tied in second place with eight semi-final qualifications each. Italy follows with seven appearances, while Argentina has reached the semi-finals six times.
England and Uruguay share sixth place with four semi-final appearances apiece, while Croatia, the Netherlands and Sweden have each made it to the final four on three occasions.
It is worth noting that the World Cup editions of 1950, 1974 and 1978 did not feature traditional semi-finals because of different competition formats.
Germany lead the way
Germany have featured in 21 World Cups and reached the semi-finals 12 times. They have gone on to play in eight finals and lifted the trophy four times.

Among their most memorable semi-final victories was the stunning 7-1 demolition of hosts Brazil in 2014, one of the most famous matches in World Cup history. Germany have also enjoyed dramatic triumphs over France and England via penalty shootouts, while suffering notable defeats to Italy, Spain and Sweden.
Brazil and France level on eight
Five-time world champions Brazil have reached the World Cup semi-finals eight times from 23 tournament appearances. Six of those campaigns ended with a place in the final, and five concluded with Brazil lifting football’s biggest prize. Their semi-final history includes victories over France, Chile, Uruguay, Sweden, the Netherlands and Türkiye, but also the unforgettable 7-1 loss to Germany on home soil in 2014.
France have matched Brazil’s tally by reaching their eighth World Cup semi-final in the ongoing 2026 tournament. Les Bleus have previously advanced to four finals and won two World Cup titles. Their run includes victories over Croatia, Portugal, Belgium and Morocco, while earlier campaigns saw painful defeats to Brazil and West Germany.

Argentina sit fifth with six semi-final appearances from 19 World Cup participations. The South Americans have reached the final every time they progressed beyond the semi-finals, winning the tournament three times. Their record features victories over the United States, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Croatia, while they are aiming to add another chapter after reaching the 2026 semi-finals.
England chasing another final

They also reached the last four in 1990, 2018 and now 2026, giving them another opportunity to fight for a place in the final.
Uruguay also boast four semi-final appearances, highlighted by their triumph in the inaugural 1930 World Cup and another title in 1950, although the latter tournament did not include a conventional semi-final stage.

Croatia have enjoyed remarkable success since becoming an independent football nation, reaching three World Cup semi-finals from just seven tournament appearances. Their best finish came in 2018 when they advanced to their first World Cup final.
