Ronaldo confirms 2026 will be his last World Cup
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the ongoing FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico will be the last of his illustrious career, bringing to an end a World Cup journey that has spanned two decades.
Speaking ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain, the 41-year-old said he is determined to savour every moment of the tournament, which marks his sixth appearance at football’s biggest stage.
“I am enjoying this World Cup, the fans and the people. And it’s gonna be my last World Cup for sure, the decision is made,” Ronaldo told reporters.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner made his World Cup debut in Germany in 2006 and has since become one of the competition’s greatest players. He is the first footballer to score in six different World Cup tournaments and is Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and the most-capped player in men’s international football.
Although he confirmed this would be his final World Cup, Ronaldo stopped short of announcing when he intends to retire from international football, saying his immediate focus is helping Portugal pursue a first-ever World Cup title.
The veteran forward also lightened the mood during the press conference by recounting a humorous encounter with an Argentine flight attendant while travelling to the tournament, in an apparent reference to his long-standing rivalry with Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
“On a flight, I knew one of the flight attendants was Argentine. Just by the way he looked at me. I told him: ‘Look, I know you’re Argentinian. You looked at me and looked away quickly… you don’t like me! But my wife is Argentine, don’t worry’,'” Ronaldo said.
Ronaldo acknowledged that he is no longer at the peak of his career but insisted he still has plenty to offer Portugal.
“I am not the player I used to be, but I’m not doing too bad,” he said, pointing to his goalscoring contribution during the tournament.
Portugal advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Croatia 2-1, with Ronaldo among the scorers, and will now face neighbours Spain in one of the tournament’s most anticipated knockout matches as he continues his quest to lift the one major trophy that has eluded him throughout his distinguished career.
