Throughout his career, Kylian Mbappe has consistently achieved feats that many believed were beyond reach.

The French superstar lifted the FIFA World Cup while still a teenager, produced a memorable hat-trick in a World Cup final, and was handed the captain’s armband for France before turning 25. Now, another historic achievement is within touching distance.

Chasing records

Mbappe netted twice as France defeated Senegal 3-1 on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, increasing his World Cup goal count to 14. Only Brazilian legend Ronaldo, who scored 15 goals, and Germany’s all-time World Cup top scorer Miroslav Klose, with 16, have found the net more often at the tournament.

At just 27 years old, the Real Madrid attacker is rapidly approaching a record that once appeared untouchable.

The France captain recently acknowledged that his current position among football’s elite scorers is something he never expected.

“Everyone talks to me about Klose’s record,” he told French newspaper Le Parisien before the tournament. “I think it’s the first time in my life that a record has felt unreal.”

His performance on Tuesday brought him even nearer to that landmark.

For much of the opening half at New York New Jersey Stadium, Mbappe struggled to make an impact as Senegal’s organized defense frustrated France and limited clear-cut opportunities.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute. Mbappe collected a perfectly weighted pass from Michael Olise, spun quickly, and fired past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in a single fluid movement.

France later strengthened its advantage through Bradley Barcola before Senegal reduced the deficit deep into stoppage time thanks to Ibrahim Mbaye.

Any hopes of a comeback were short-lived.

Moments after Senegal’s goal, Mbappe seized possession in midfield, spotted an opening, and unleashed a powerful strike from approximately 30 yards out. The effort flew beyond Mendy and settled in the back of the net.

The victory gave France three valuable points in its opening Group I fixture, but Mbappe’s individual accomplishments attracted even greater attention. His brace saw him surpass Olivier Giroud to become France’s highest-ever scorer with 58 goals, while also moving beyond Pele’s World Cup total of 12 goals.

Despite a trophy-laden career, Mbappe remains one of the most closely examined players in world football.

Ahead of the tournament, he reflected on the level of public attention he has experienced since bursting onto the scene as a teenager.

Handling fame

“Fame? I was prepared to be famous, but I think what I’ve become today goes beyond fame, and you’re never really prepared for that,” he told Le Parisien. “You just adapt the best you can.”

The forward also admitted there are still aspects of his game he wants to improve. Discussing his defensive contribution, he emphasized his willingness to work harder for the team as France pursues another World Cup title across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

“I need to take the extra step [with my defensive work] because it’s something important for the team. I’m ready to do whatever it takes because I want to win at all costs.”

France coach Didier Deschamps, however, appeared unconcerned about criticisms of Mbappe’s work rate following the match.

“If you want to miss the first half and score two goals in the second half of another match, that’s okay with me,” he quipped.

Known for trusting his own judgment rather than outside opinions, Deschamps was emphatic when discussing Mbappe’s standing in the sport.

“People will still criticize him,” the France manager said. “But he’s an iconic player.”

The coach’s message was unmistakable. While Mbappe may be willing to shoulder more defensive duties, France benefits most when he is allowed to focus on what he does best in the attacking third.

Against Senegal, only a handful of decisive moments were needed from the forward. One goal demonstrated precision and composure, while the other showcased raw power and exceptional technique.

Those contributions proved decisive in securing France’s opening victory and moved Mbappe another step closer to the World Cup scoring summit.

Whether he overtakes Klose during this tournament remains uncertain. What seems increasingly undeniable, however, is Deschamps’ assessment of his star player.
