Koeman to decide next move after Netherlands crash out of World Cup

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has revealed he will take time to evaluate his future after his side’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign ended with a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

The Dutch manager admitted the disappointment of the result was still overwhelming following the dramatic loss at Monterrey Stadium, a defeat that saw the Netherlands record its earliest World Cup exit since being knocked out in the round of 16 at the tournament in Germany two decades ago.

Koeman to consider next move

“I haven’t resigned. I’m going to reflect on my future,” he said. “Right now, the disappointment from the match is still very fresh. I’ll gather my thoughts and maybe I’ll come to a conclusion by tomorrow morning,” he explained.

The Netherlands appeared on course for victory after Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute of the round-of-32 encounter. However, Morocco found a dramatic equaliser through Issa Diop in the first minute of stoppage time, forcing the contest into extra time before eventually prevailing in the penalty shootout.

Dutch players Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert their spot kicks as Morocco progressed to the next stage.

“It was a difficult draw from the moment we saw Morocco in our group, but that’s football,” Koeman said. “We put a lot of energy into this match and it went back and forth. Maybe Morocco created the better chances. We took the lead and I didn’t think they had a real solution, then they scored a fortunate goal.”

“It’s even more painful when it comes in stoppage time. We were also unlucky in the penalty shootout.”

Tactical decisions

Koeman also stood by his tactical decision to deploy a five-man defensive setup, rejecting suggestions that his approach was overly cautious.

“We conceded far less than we did against Sweden and Tunisia [in the group stage],” Koeman said. “If the equaliser hadn’t been scored, people would probably praise the decision.” The tactician explained.

“I felt the change was necessary. Too often in previous matches we gave opponents too much space, and if that had happened tonight we probably wouldn’t even have reached extra time. People see the game from the sidelines, but I’m with the team every day. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t change anything,” he added.

Despite defending his strategy, the former Netherlands international acknowledged that his team lacked enough attacking threat, particularly in the final third.

“I thought we could have been more dangerous on the left with Micky [van de Ven] and Cody,” he said. “We could have moved the ball quicker. We got into good positions on the right a few times, but the final pass wasn’t good enough. You can ask whether playing with five defenders affected our attacking play.” Koeman said.
