Inside list of 8 World Cup winning teams in history

With just eight days remaining before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, football fans around the globe are reflecting on one of the tournament’s most remarkable statistics: only eight countries have ever been crowned world champions since the competition began in 1930.

The FIFA World Cup remains the pinnacle of international football, bringing together the world’s best national teams in a battle for global supremacy. Yet despite the tournament’s long history spanning nearly a century, only a select group of nations have managed to get their hands on the famous trophy.

Dominant Brazil

Leading the all-time winners’ chart is Brazil with five World Cup titles. The South American giants claimed their crowns in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, cementing their reputation as one of football’s greatest nations.

Sharing second place with four titles each are Germany and Italy. Germany’s triumphs came in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014, while Italy lifted the trophy in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.

Defending champions Argentina sit fourth on the list with three World Cup victories. La Albiceleste were crowned champions in 1978, 1986 and most recently in 2022 after their memorable success in Qatar.

France and Uruguay have each won the tournament twice. Uruguay made history by winning the inaugural World Cup in 1930 before adding another title in 1950, while France celebrated triumphs in 1998 and 2018.

The remaining two champions are England and Spain, who have each won the prestigious trophy once. England’s lone success came on home soil in 1966, while Spain captured their first and only World Cup title in 2010 in South Africa.

Opening fixture

The opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will see hosts Mexico face South Africa on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Mexico City Stadium, recreating the same fixture that launched the 2010 tournament.

South Africa returns to football’s biggest stage after missing the last four editions. Also competing in Group A are South Korea, appearing at the World Cup for the 12th time, and the Czech Republic, which is making its first appearance since 2006.
