The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues on Sunday, June 14, 2026, with an action-packed schedule featuring four matches across Groups E and F, as several nations begin their campaigns with hopes of making an early statement in the tournament.

One of the standout fixtures of the day will see four-time world champions Germany take on tournament newcomers Curaçao in Houston in Group E. The Caribbean nation has already made history by becoming the smallest country ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup and will now face one of football’s traditional powerhouses in their first-ever World Cup match.

Germany head into the clash as favourites, boasting a talented squad led by creative stars such as Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. However, Curaçao will be eager to embrace the underdog role and continue their remarkable football journey on the world’s biggest stage.

However, Germany’s preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup have suffered a significant setback after promising forward Lennart Karl was ruled out of the tournament through injury.

The disappointing development cast a gloomy atmosphere over the German camp in Chicago, according to German Football Association president Bernd Neuendorf.

Speaking about the mood within the squad, Neuendorf revealed that emotions ran high when players learned of Karl’s diagnosis after the young Bayern Munich attacker returned from hospital.

“Some tears were rolling,” Neuendorf said.

The youngster’s injury is not the only issue troubling coach Julian Nagelsmann. Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is still working his way back to peak condition after recently dealing with a calf injury.

Although Neuer was restored as Germany’s number one goalkeeper shortly before the tournament, he will not feature against the United States and remains a doubt for the opening World Cup fixture.

Netherlands face Japan in a match that promises high-quality football in Group F. The Dutch, known for their attacking style and rich World Cup pedigree, will be keen to start strongly against a Japanese side that has developed a reputation for discipline, technical excellence and upsetting higher-ranked opponents at major tournaments.
