France beat Morocco 2-0 to reach World Cup semi-finals

France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Morocco on Thursday, July 9, 2026, ending the Atlas Lions’ impressive run and setting up a last-four clash with the winner of Spain and Belgium.
France dominated possession for long spells but were frustrated by Morocco’s disciplined defensive display in a goalless first half.
The 2022 World Cup finalists were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead before the break when Kylian Mbappé stepped up from the penalty spot. However, the French captain failed to convert, allowing Morocco to remain level heading into halftime.
France finally made the breakthrough in the 59th minute.
Mbappé redeemed himself with a superb curling finish that beat the Moroccan goalkeeper, ending the North Africans’ resistance after an hour of determined defending.
Ousmane Dembélé doubled France’s advantage moments later, capitalising on the momentum generated by Mbappé’s opener to put Didier Deschamps’ side firmly in control.
Morocco responded with a series of substitutions in search of a way back into the contest but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a composed French defence.
The quarter-final was fiercely contested, with several physical challenges disrupting the flow of play. Morocco defender Issa Diop was shown a yellow card during the encounter, although it ultimately proved academic as his side exited the tournament.
The victory continued France’s impressive march through the tournament, having won all five of their World Cup matches. Les Bleus had reached the last eight by defeating Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16, while Morocco advanced after a convincing 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada.
For Morocco, the defeat brought to an end another memorable World Cup campaign. The Atlas Lions reached a second consecutive World Cup quarter-final after emerging from a difficult knockout path, reinforcing their status as one of Africa’s strongest football nations.
France will now face the winner of Friday’s quarter-final between Spain and Belgium for a place in the World Cup final.
