De La Fuente wants more from Spain after reaching World Cup knockouts
By Joel Masibo, June 27, 2026Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente believes his side still has room to grow despite securing top spot in their FIFA World Cup 2026 group with a narrow 1-0 victory over Uruguay on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
A first-half goal from Alex Baena proved decisive, earning Spain their second victory of the tournament while eliminating two-time world champions Uruguay from the competition.
Performance reflections
Reflecting on the performance, De la Fuente admitted there were aspects of Spain’s game that require improvement.
“We need to improve the speed of our passing and the rhythm of our play,” De la Fuente said, pointing out that his team was able to find fluency against Uruguay’s press.

He explained that Uruguay’s intense pressure made it difficult for Spain to settle into their usual style.
“Today was a very difficult match. It was almost impossible to put together three or four passes. That’s something we need to work on. We need to improve how we move the ball and create chances through different areas, not only down the wings.”
Although Spain dominated possession, completing 637 passes compared to Uruguay’s 305, they struggled to convert that control into clear opportunities. The European side registered only one shot on target from six attempts, while Uruguay managed five efforts, forcing goalkeeper Unai Simon into two important saves.
Despite the lack of attacking fluency, De la Fuente praised his players for adapting to a demanding contest and finding a way to secure victory.
“Every match is different. Every opponent tries to maximize its strengths,” De la Fuente said. “Uruguay has outstanding players when it comes to one-on-one duels. That’s what defines the team. We have different virtues. You have to know how to win these kinds of matches.
“Perhaps we weren’t as brilliant as we’ve been on other occasions, but you can’t always be. It was an extremely demanding game. We kept our composure and tried not to be provoked.” He explained.
Next assignments
Spain will now turn their attention to the Round of 32, where they are scheduled to play in Los Angeles on Thursday, July 2, 2026, against an opponent yet to be determined.
The coach expressed satisfaction with his squad’s progress while acknowledging that the challenges will only become tougher.
“I’m very happy with the result,” he said. “I think this squad has done outstanding work and deserves a lot of credit. That’s why we finished top of the group.
“The pressure will only increase from here. We’ve been building this team for three and a half years. It’s a side that doesn’t concede many goals and is also dangerous in attack.”
Ahead of the Uruguay clash, De la Fuente had described Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa as an “innovator,” and maintained his admiration for the Argentine after an intense encounter that ended with Agustin Canobbio being sent off late in the match following a studs-up tackle on Pau Cubarsi.

“I continue to admire Marcelo Bielsa. We said before the match that it would demand the very highest level from us. In other matches we may have felt more comfortable. The referees are there to ensure the rules are respected. Today everything was taken to the limit, but we were equal to the challenge.”
Spain’s victory was overshadowed by injuries to wingers Yeremy Pino and Nico Williams. Pino sustained a shoulder injury, while Williams was forced off with a muscle problem.
Providing an update, De la Fuente said:
“We’ll know more about Nico tomorrow because he’s still in pain,” De la Fuente said. “Yeremy’s injury is quite serious. We’re afraid he may not be able to play again in this tournament.” He stated.
