Boost for England as Reece James declares himself ready for Argentina clash
By Joel Masibo, July 14, 2026England full-back Reece James has confirmed he is back to full fitness ahead of the Three Lions’ 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal showdown with Argentina on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
The Chelsea defender had been sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury during England’s group-stage encounter against Ghana. The setback ruled him out of victories over Panama, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mexico before he made his comeback as a second-half substitute in England’s hard-fought 2-1 quarterfinal win against Norway.
With Jarell Quansah unavailable due to suspension after being sent off against Mexico, James is widely expected to return to the starting lineup as England look to strengthen a defense that has allowed opponents several opportunities throughout the tournament.
James ready
“It’s good to be back out there,” he told the Lions’ Den podcast, relieved to have recovered so quickly.

Reflecting on his return, James explained the effort that went into regaining fitness in time for the tournament’s decisive stages.
“Picking up an injury at a tournament is always a race against the clock. I applied myself,” he added when explaining his rapid recovery.
The defender also believes England’s recent experience in major international competitions has prepared the squad for the pressure of another World Cup semifinal. England reached the last four at the 2018 World Cup, advanced to the quarterfinals in Qatar four years later, and also appeared in the previous two UEFA European Championship finals.
“It comes with experience. The higher stakes the game is, the more pressure… We’ve been doing it for years, the fundamentals are the same, but the prize is slightly different,” he said.
Players focused
James stressed that the players remain focused on their objectives and are not distracted by external expectations or media attention surrounding the team.

“We’re in a bubble, trying to complete our mission. It’s hard to see the outside. We’re happy we’re making everyone at home proud. This is what dreams are made of. Everyone as a little boy dreamt of playing and winning a World Cup,” he concluded.
