Bielsa takes responsibility for Uruguay’s early World Cup exit

Head coach Marcelo Bielsa has admitted he must shoulder the blame after Uruguay’s disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to an end, acknowledging that he failed to bring the best out of a talented squad.

Uruguay, winners of the tournament on two previous occasions, crashed out of the competition following a narrow 1-0 loss to Spain on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The defeat left them third in Group H with just two points from their three group-stage matches.

Bielsa’s reflections

Reflecting on the team’s elimination, Bielsa conceded that he had not succeeded in turning the quality within his squad into effective collective performances.

“I wasn’t able to get the best out of the quality Uruguay has in its players,” Bielsa told reporters. “I couldn’t get the level of the individual players to come together as a team that reflected their quality.”

The Argentine tactician also addressed two decisions that attracted widespread attention during the contest: substituting skipper Federico Valverde while Uruguay were searching for an equalizer and replacing goalkeeper Fernando Muslera at the interval.

According to Bielsa, taking off Valverde in the 56th minute was a tactical move designed to strengthen his side’s attacking threat and improve their chances of finding a goal.

“I wanted the team to have a greater attacking presence,” he explained. “The objective was to create more scoring opportunities.”

After being substituted, television footage captured the Real Madrid midfielder visibly emotional on the bench.

Bielsa also clarified that Muslera’s halftime substitution was not a coaching decision. The veteran goalkeeper had earlier failed to stop Alex Baena’s strike, which slipped through his hands and proved decisive.

“That wasn’t my decision,” Bielsa said. “It was Muslera’s own decision.”

The Uruguay coach urged critics to avoid placing excessive blame on the experienced shot-stopper, insisting the former Lazio and Galatasaray goalkeeper deserved greater understanding.

“He has tremendous character and is a great player,” Bielsa said. “I think we’re judging him too harshly.” He explained.
