Aldrine Kibet’s Celta Fortunas make history with maiden promotion to La Liga 2
By Luke Oluoch, June 21, 2026Celta Fortuna, the reserve team of Spanish top-tier side Celta Vigo, has made history by sealing promotion to La Liga 2, Spain’s second-tier league, for the next season of the competition.
Fred Álvarez’s boys achieved a historic milestone, ending a 103-year wait to secure the club’s first-ever promotion to the Spanish Segunda División.
Celeste made the feat by thrashing SD Ponferradina 4-1 on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in a return leg clash at the Abanca-Balaídos.
The two teams had battled to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the promotion playoff final.
Hugo González and Arcos Angel, who starred in the promotion playoffs’ dramatic 4–3 aggregate victory over CE Europa to take Fortuna to the finals, were again among the scorers in the decisive return leg, with the former scoring a brace.

Ghanaian youngster Bernard Samouah added the third in the 86th minute before Adrià Capdevila rounded the scores with the fourth goal.
Kubet, who featured in the extra time of the first leg, remained unused on the bench for the final.
The feat now asserts Celta’s status among the best youth academies in Spain; the club has now earned a spot in the second tier, where they join Job Ochieng’s Real Sociedad B team as the only ones with their second team in the silver category of Spanish football, on the verge of reaching the top flight.
Kibet joined Celta Vigo on a four-year deal in July 2025 from the Nàstic Sports Academy. While he was primarily signed for the U19 (Cantera) side, Kibet’s meteoric rise saw him integrated into Celta Vigo B (Celta Fortuna) in the Primera RFEF, putting him closer to the side viewed as the stepping stone to the coveted first team.
For Kibet, the huge milestone comes a few days after celebrating his birthday in Spain and just a month shy of his anniversary of joining the Spanish reserves for his maiden professional stint.
