5 outstanding moments African teams left at FIFA World Cup 2026

The expanded tournament format doubled Africa’s participation compared to the 2022 edition, and the continent made full use of the opportunity. Nine of the 10 African teams advanced beyond the group stage, while Morocco once again led the continent’s charge by reaching the quarter-finals.
Before the 2026 competition, African nations had accumulated just 37 World Cup victories in history. During this tournament alone, they added another 11 wins, highlighting the remarkable progress made across the continent. Below is a look at how each African nation performed.
Cabo Verde captures global attention
Making their first-ever World Cup appearance, Cabo Verde emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
The Blue Sharks frustrated Spain with a scoreless draw thanks largely to goalkeeper Vozinha’s outstanding display before earning a thrilling 2-2 draw against Uruguay and another stalemate against Saudi Arabia.
They nearly produced one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history when they pushed defending champions Argentina into extra time during the Round of 32. Argentina eventually prevailed 3-2, but Cabo Verde earned widespread admiration for their fearless performances.
Egypt comes agonisingly close
Egypt impressed throughout the tournament.
The Pharaohs opened with draws against Belgium and Iran before defeating New Zealand 3-1 to qualify for the knockout rounds. They then eliminated Australia via a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.
In the Round of 16, Egypt looked set for a famous victory after building a 2-0 lead over Argentina. However, late goals from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi restored parity before Enzo Fernández completed Argentina’s dramatic comeback with the winning goal.
Morocco once again flies Africa’s flag
Morocco produced Africa’s best performance, advancing to the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to France.
Although they fell short of matching their historic semi-final appearance in Qatar 2022, the Atlas Lions once again proved they belong among the world’s elite.
They began by drawing 1-1 with Brazil before edging Scotland 1-0 through an early strike from Ismael Saibari. A convincing 4-2 victory over Haiti secured top spot in the group.
Morocco then eliminated the Netherlands on penalties after a 1-1 draw and comfortably defeated Canada 3-0 thanks to a brace from Azzedine Ounahi. Their impressive run finally came to an end against France in the last eight.
Ghana exceeds expectations
Ghana enjoyed several memorable moments during the tournament.
The Black Stars began with a dramatic stoppage-time victory over Panama before frustrating England in a goalless draw despite facing relentless pressure throughout the match.
Although Croatia defeated them 2-1, Ghana still progressed to the knockout rounds, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Colombia following a goal from Jhon Arias.
DR Congo impresses on return
After booking their place through the intercontinental play-offs, DR Congo exceeded expectations.
The Leopards earned a draw against Portugal before losing narrowly to Colombia. They secured qualification by defeating Uzbekistan 3-1, with Yoane Wissa scoring twice.
In the Round of 32, Brian Cipenga gave them an early advantage against England, but Harry Kane’s two goals sent the European side through.
