We’re still on top! Gor Mahia coach downplays Tusker loss as title race takes strange turn
By Luke Oluoch, April 15, 2026Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has spoken out following the team’s defeat to Tusker FC on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, stating that the team had been on a fine run before the blip against the rejuvenated Brewers.
Speaking after the match at Wang’uru Stadium, Akonnor said the team has to accept the loss and focus their preparation on the next match.
Regarding the details of the match, Akonnor revisited his remarks on the scheduling and highlighted a potentially game-changing moment when the team was denied a penalty.
“We had chances to score, and we had a penalty, which was unfairly refused. My player had the ball, and was ahead of his opponent. This is a clear penalty. He controlled the ball, and I am lost for words as to why it was not given,” he stated.
Impact on title race
The Ghanaian further downplayed the overall impact of the defeat, which left them only two points ahead of challengers AFC Leopards, a major shift in the title race.
The loss. Gor’s first in the year, and weeks after the draw against Kariobangi Sharks came as Fred Ambani’s charges had been on a fine run and now only trail the leaders by two points.

“It is not just two points; we would win the league if it ended now. We will try to better our results in our next match and continue the momentum we had before the last match. We are still very hopeful and believe we have done so much in the league so far. We are still on top by two points, and we will work from there as we head to our next match,” he stated.
The coach also refused to place blame on his team, adding that the players had done a lot to put the club where it is.
“We cannot criticise the players. They have done a lot this season. This is our first loss in the year, and we only have to accept the defeat and focus on our next match,” he added.
The loss leaves Gor Mahia on 57 points, while AFC Leopards have 55 points.
K’Ogalo will face Bandari FC in their next assignment, as AFC Leopards take on Kenya Police FC before the two sides meet in the 99th Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo Stadium.
