Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has reflected on his illustrious career after announcing his retirement at the age of 34.

Speaking to Sky Sports in a recent interview, the former Kenya international has explained the long-standing injury struggles that forced him to retire, bringing an end to a 19-year career at the age of 34.

Nagging injury

The injury problem dates back to a serious knee injury sustained during a pre-season friendly at Wembley in 2017.

The damage to the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder’s knee cartilage kept him out for more than four months, and although he returned to action, the issue never fully disappeared. He later aggravated the injury in a match against Chelsea, and from that point on, managing pain became part of his daily routine.

”I am lucky to be able to manage my knee injury for about six years and to finish like this, I have no regrets,” Wanyama said.

Given the former Celtic and Southampton midfielder’s physical, combative style in midfield, Wanyama continued playing while dealing with discomfort, relying on ice treatment, rest and anti-inflammatory medication, particularly in the latter stages of his career.

Next chapter

With his playing days now over, Wanyama is already planning his next chapter in football. He completed his UEFA B Licence in Northern Ireland in 2025 and is working towards his A Licence, with a long-term ambition of coaching in Europe.

”I have been doing a bit of coaching, and I am now on my UEFA A license. Hopefully, I will finish that and get experience at the club level coaching.” He added.

Apart from focusing on his coaching career, Wanyama is involved in grassroots development in Kenya, according to his earlier interview with The Daily Mail.

“I have my foundation here in Nairobi where I work with young people and train every day…working with the younger generation is the first step, then we’ll see what comes next” he said.
