Shujaa face must-win clash against Great Britain after a difficult start in Valladolid

Kenya’s national rugby sevens team, Shujaa, will head into their final Pool A fixture against Great Britain on Saturday afternoon, May 30, 2026, under immense pressure after suffering two defeats on the opening day of the third round of the World Sevens Championship in Valladolid, Spain.

The Kenyan side endured a frustrating start to the tournament, narrowly losing to Australia in dramatic fashion before falling 14-0 to South Africa in their second outing on Friday, May 29, 2026. Those results leave Shujaa rooted at the bottom of the group standings with a single point.

South Africa and Australia currently share top spot with six points each, while Great Britain occupy third position with two points. As a result, Kenya’s hopes of progressing remain slim, with victory over Great Britain now essential.

Must-win scenario

Under the tournament format, the top two teams in each pool automatically secure quarterfinal spots, while the best two third-placed teams also advance. For Shujaa, defeating Great Britain is the only route to keeping their knockout-stage ambitions alive.

Against South Africa, Kenya struggled to find rhythm early in the match and paid heavily for costly mistakes. An intercepted pass from Nygel Amaitsa allowed Sheldon van Wyk to race away and score, with the successful conversion giving the Blitzboks an early advantage.

South Africa continued to threaten, but Kenya briefly escaped further punishment when Festus Shiasi recovered after losing possession to stop another dangerous attack. The Blitzboks maintained their dominance and were unlucky not to add another try after an awkward bounce denied Van Wyk a second score.

Shujaa’s best chance of the first half came when Patrick Odongo sliced through the South African defence before releasing Kevin Wekesa. However, the move broke down after Wekesa lost control of the ball near the 22-metre line, denying Kenya what looked like a certain try.

Coach Bling Wambua made changes at the break, introducing Dennis Abukuse in place of Odongo in an effort to spark the team.

The substitution soon became complicated when Abukuse was shown a yellow card shortly after entering the field, reducing Kenya to six players. South Africa quickly took advantage of the extra space, with Sebastian Jobb crossing over despite a determined effort from Christant Ojwang to stop him. The conversion was added, sealing a comfortable 14-0 win for the South Africans.

Shujaa now turn their focus to Saturday’s decisive encounter against Great Britain, knowing that anything less than a victory will end their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals.

The Kenyan side currently sits seventh in the overall SVNS Championship rankings with eight points, following mixed performances at the Hong Kong Sevens. They are targeting a stronger finish in Spain as they seek valuable points that could boost their chances of earning qualification for next season’s World Rugby Sevens Series.
