Omanyala vs the world: Kenyan sprinter to face elite rivals for Diamond League 100m race

By , May 10, 2026

Kenyan sprinter and Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, faces an icy test against a star-studded field this May 2026 for the Diamond League meet-up in China.

The league circuit moves to Shaoxing, China, on May 16, 2026, with the men’s 100m shaping up to be a historic showdown.

Omanyala, fresh off reclaiming his crown at the Kip Keino Classic with a season-best 9.96, will test his revival against a field of global heavyweights equally in peak form.

According to the roster by the competition organisers, he will contest the African trio of Akani Simbine and Gift Leotlela, both of South Africa, and Lestilse Tebogo of Botswana, commonly known as the Schoolboy.

Kennedy vs Omanyala

Beyond the continental frontier, Australian history-maker Lachlan Kennedy will come face-to-face with Omanyala for the second time.

The 22-year-old Australian is arguably the most in-form sprinter on the circuit right now.

He made history as the first Australian to break the 10-second barrier on home soil, clocking 9.96 in the heats and repeating the feat to win the national title on April 10, 2026.

The ace was the sole disruptor of Omanyala’s winning run in the Kip Keino Classic tour, where the Kenyan has been in dominant form in almost all three past editions.

Formidable USA trio

Meanwhile, the United States trio of Trayvon Bromell, Kenny Bednarek, and Christian Coleman completes the other formidable lineup.

The American contingent brings a combined resume of world titles and unrivaled personal feats, with Bromwell hoping to return to his best form of old after battles with injuries.

He warmed up to the race during the Gainesville openers in April 2026, clocking a 37.78 in an international 4x100m quartet.

The most potent threat over the 60 metres remains Christian Coleman.

The athlete was all hopeful but cautious of his recent blistering performance, and it remains to be seen how he steps up from continental triumphs to the global stage.
