Omanyala settles for silver in star-studded sprint at Shanghai Diamond League
By Luke Oluoch, May 16, 2026The script of close yet agonisingly narrow finishes for Kenyan athletes at the Shanghai Diamond League extended to Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, who settled for second place despite clocking his fourth sub-10 performance of the season in Saturday’s (May 16, 2026) 100m race.
South Africa’s Gift Leotlela stunned the star-studded men’s field, clocking a season-best time of 9.97s in a close finish. He held off a charging Omanyala, who ran 9.98s, and Kenny Bednarek of the USA, who also crossed the line in 9.98 s.

Trayvon Bromell took fourth in 10.01 s.
The encounter shaped up to be a historic showdown as the Kenyan lined up against a formidable USA trio and an African powerhouse contingent that included South Africa’s Akani Simbine and Gift Leotlela alongside Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo.

Omanyala had recently reclaimed his crown at the Kip Keino Classic with a season-best 9.96 on April 24, 2026—a performance that served as his second sub-10 finish following his splendid win at the Grand Prix in Addis Ababa on April 18, 2026.
Meanwhile, this Diamond League matchup was touted to further test his early-season revival against an elite global field.
His 9.98 in China marks his fourth sub-10 performance of the 2026 outdoor season alone, keeping up an incredible streak after his frustrating 2025 campaign, where he did not break 10 seconds at all.

The run extends the runners-up position for Kenyan athletes after Faith Cherotich and Reynold Cheruiyot both settled for silver in the women’s and men’s 3000 m steeplechase races early on.
Ugandan Peruth Chemutai clocked a brilliant 8:51.47 in a thrilling photo finish, leaving Cherotich just a fraction of a second behind at 8:51.48.
The blistering race produced spectacular times across the field, with four women dipping under the nine-minute barrier. Among them was Tunisia’s Marwa Bouzayani, who broke ground by setting a new national record of 8:58.09.
