Lampard guides Coventry City back to Premier League after 25 years
By Joel Masibo, April 18, 2026Frank Lampard guided Coventry City to a long-awaited return to the Premier League after drawing 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers in a tense EFL Championship clash at Ewood Park on Friday night, April 17, 2026.
The result was enough to confirm promotion for Coventry City, ending a 25-year absence from the top flight, with three matches still left in the campaign.
Tense moment
The visitors’ celebrations looked set to be postponed when Ryoya Morishita broke the deadlock early in the second half. The Blackburn attacker reacted quickest inside the box to fire home from close range after a defensive lapse.
Despite starting brightly, Coventry struggled to break down a well-organised Blackburn side for much of the game. Earlier chances had come and gone, including a close-range header from Yuki Ohashi that was comfortably saved, and a lively effort from Jack Rudoni that struck the side netting.

However, with time running out, Coventry found the breakthrough they desperately needed. Defender Bobby Thomas rose highest to meet a well-delivered free-kick and powered a header into the net in the 84th minute, sparking scenes of celebration among the travelling supporters.
The equaliser not only salvaged a point but also sealed a historic promotion, marking a remarkable turnaround for a club that has endured years of instability, including multiple relegations, managerial changes, and stadium relocations.
Head coach Frank Lampard expressed pride in his squad’s achievement, highlighting the journey they have taken together since his arrival. He noted the strong bond built within the team and praised both the players and staff for their commitment and resilience throughout the campaign.
Lampard, who previously enjoyed major success as a player, emphasised that guiding Coventry back to the Premier League ranks among his most fulfilling accomplishments, given the circumstances and challenges involved.
Lampard speaks
“I’m proud,” he told Sky Sports. “Sometimes, all managers talk about the players, but I am proud, and I’m proud of myself, the staff and the boys.
“We drove up 15 months ago in a people carrier, and we went into a bit of an unknown, as you always go into a job.

“We drove up 15 months ago in a people carrier, and we went into a bit of an unknown, as you always go into a job.
“We’ve fallen in love with the players, how they’ve reacted, the fan base, how it’s reacted. So it’s right up there for me for what I may have achieved. I was fortunate to be in great Chelsea teams. Winning the Champions League and winning leagues was amazing. Sometimes I could thank Didier Drogba or John Terry for that.” The former Chelsea and Manchester City legend said.
The promotion caps a dramatic rise for Coventry, who have climbed back up the English football pyramid after dropping as far as League Two in recent years. Their return to the top division marks a new chapter for the club and its supporters, who have endured a long and difficult road back to elite football.
