Chelsea and Spanish defender Marc Cucurella is reportedly on his way out of the London club after agreeing to join Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the latest on the left back’s transfer move, days after the Spaniard emerged as a target for both Barcelona and the capital-based club.

“Real Madrid reach verbal agreement to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea,” a statement from Fabrizio read.

Agreement reached

The left back will join the La Liga side after the World Cup, making his return to his native home, where he came through the ranks in the Barcelona academy, La Masia.

The player is set to join Real Madrid after the World Cup.

“A verbal agreement is in place between all parties, including the player. He is the left back wanted by incoming coach Jose Mourinho,” the journalist revealed.

Additional reports indicate that Madrid’s rivals, Atletico Madrid, had also opened talks with the star, but Cucurella picked Real.

The marauding left back rose through the youth ranks of Spanish football to become a serial winner with Chelsea in the English Premier League. He first moved from Espanyol’s academy to Barcelona in 2012. where he honed his skills through the La Masia football system.

Switch to Chelsea

A stint on loan at Eibar followed between 2018 and 2019, but his stint was short-lived despite impressing at the club, which triggered his purchase clause, and he was swiftly loaned to Getafe, albeit with an option to buy.

His breakthrough transfer came in August 2021, when Brighton secured his services. The left back went on to become a hit at the Amex under coach Graham Potter, operating as a dynamic left-back, wing-back, or left-sided defender. He capped his first season with a player-of-the-season award.

Chelsea would later break the bank, snapping him up from the Seagulls for a fee of approximately Ksh 7.92 billion after signing the English coach from the rival club alongside goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
