The Kenya Rugby Union will host a Women’s 10-a-side tournament at the RFUEA Grounds on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in an event expected to generate excitement and spotlight the continued rise of the women’s game locally.

The competition will feature a mix of new entrants and seasoned outfits, creating a platform where developing talent and established sides compete side by side while highlighting the steady progress of women’s rugby in the country.

Development strategy

The festival forms an important part of the Union’s long-term development strategy, which aims to broaden participation among women and create structured, lasting pathways for female players. More than just a contest for trophies, the event reflects KRU’s broader vision of expanding access, promoting equality in sport, and building a strong foundation for the future of women’s rugby in Kenya.

Matches will start with group fixtures before advancing to the plate and cup semi-final rounds. Successful teams will then proceed to the plate final and the third-place playoff, culminating in the showpiece cup final where the overall winners will be determined.

Ten teams have confirmed participation and will compete in two groups of five. Group A comprises Mwamba Women, Quins Queens, NYS Spades, Pioneer Gilgil and Murang’a Ladies, while Group B includes Northern Suburbs, Blad Babes, NYS Scorpions, Kiamba Ladies and Kisii University.

Kick-off for the opening matches is scheduled for 9:00 am, with action running throughout the day until the final match at 5:50 pm, when the champions will be crowned. The tournament will also serve as a preparatory test ahead of the 2026 Kenya Cup Women’s League, which begins on Saturday, February 7, offering teams an early measure of their readiness before the 15-a-side campaign begins.
