Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga has conveyed his contentment with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF)’s increased prize money for the new league winners of the 2025/26 season, describing it as an impressive milestone for Kenyan football.

In an interview on Saturday, June 6, 2026, the Qatar-based striker, who was among the elite guests during Gor Mahia’s crowning at Nyayo National Stadium, said the token is a critical step in improving football standards in the country.

Fantastic season

“The season has been fantastic. It has been impressive to see the league winners bag 15 million. For me, it’s a good start. Our time, we played for 4 million. Hopefully, next year and the season to come, it will be much better with other small teams rising to the occasion. That is how we will make our football competitive,” he posited.

The former three-time league winner with K’Ogalo also hailed the levels of competition and rivalry witnessed in the run-up to the league finale, where archrivals Gor Mahia only secured the title in the penultimate fixture after edging Ingwe in an intense two-horse race.

“It was really good to see the fine run from Gor Mahia. The league was fantastic; we have seen a lot of push from rival teams. Props to AFC for really giving a good fight until the end of the season,” he explained.

The campaign saw a return of Kenya’s most-followed club in recent history as AFC Leopards went on to finish second behind Gor, who bagged their record 22nd league crown.

“We are hopeful next season will also witness the same: we hope teams will become better with the sponsorship. For FKF, we hope they will continue to seek the sponsorship and make the league event better,” he concluded.
