Ambani eyes FKF’s presidency after AFC Leopards’ tenure
By Joel Masibo, September 6, 2026AFC Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani is targeting to become the next Football Kenya Federation President after completing his mission at the den.
Speaking in a local radio interview on Saturday, September 5, 2026, the ex-Harambee Stars international said he will not take the political path like his predecessors but will focus on streamlining the federation, currently led by Hussein Mohammed, which is embroiled in numerous court battles and leadership wrangles.
The current Football Kenya Federation (FKF) tenure under President Hussein Mohammed is scheduled to end in December 2028, barring any changes from ongoing term-limit reform proposals.
“I am telling you, naomba Mungu anisaidie I fix AFC Leopards, and then I leave it in proper hands. My next target is not politics, many of those guys who have passed through AFC Leopards have joined politics in the villages. My target is that federation, so that I can sweep it to the bottom. Hiyo ujinga hamutaona, haki ya Mungu, you will not see these shenanigans playing around,” he said.
On fixing AFC Leopards, a public spat previously erupted between former club Dan Shikanda and his successor Boniface Ambani, after Ambani accused the club’s previous management of leaving the Kenyan Premier League side in serious financial and legal distress.
In April 2026, Shikanda took to social media and hit back at Ambani on what he claimed as verbal attack towards him in matters of AFC Leopards management.
“Football leadership must always reflect the values of respect, integrity, and accountability. It is therefore deeply disappointing to witness recent verbal attacks directed at me by the current Chairman of A.F.C. Leopards.”
“While football will always evoke passion and differing views, resorting to personal attacks and public accusations is neither constructive nor worthy of the great institution that this game represents. As I mentioned earlier – the Kenya Federation of Kenya that I am part of will remain objective in the Sportpesa league.. and the league will be won on the pitch!”
“If there are concerns regarding the conduct of the league or its administration under the Football Kenya Federation, there are clear and established channels to address them , channels that uphold professionalism, fairness, and due process. I stand firmly by the work done during my tenure at AFC Leopards SC, and respect for the institution. That speaks for itself and will not be diminished by noise,” he said.
Ambani was elected new AFC Leopards Chairman following clubs elections held on June 29, 2025, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. He garnered a total of 1,101 votes, against 682 by his only challenger, Enos Mutoka.
Ambani targets FKF’s presidency
Boniface Ambani’s declaration for the FKF’s presidency comes at the moment when President Hussein Mohammed and his vice, McDonald Mariga, are not reading from the same script in matters of running the country’s football after a failed attempted coup at the federation earlier in the year.
Recently, Mariga expressed his deep concerns over the state of affairs of the country’s top-flight football amid a deepening standoff that has seen the 2026/27 football season kick-off postponed due to the 2019 and 2025 Kenyan Premier League’s promotion/relegation rules.
