Abud Omar: Gor Mahia underestimated Tusker and got punished in Super Cup duel

Though not included in the matchday squad for the Super Cup final, the Harambee Stars defender watched on from the stands as his new club delivered an attacking masterclass to edge the reigning Kenyan Premier League champions 3-1 and claim the first trophy of the season.
Julien Mette’s side stunned the reigning league champions to secure their first silverware of the campaign, with goals from Francis Oduor, Eugene Ikutwa’s thunderbolt, and Ian Simiyu doing the damage.
“Gor Mahia underestimated Tusker players. When you underestimate young players, you are going to get punished, and that is what befell Gor Mahia,” Omar said.
Omar further expressed belief that both sides can draw lessons from their performances ahead of the busy schedule representing Kenya in the continental games.

“It is a lesson to them and equally for us as we head into the continental games,” the outspoken left-footed fullback added.
The final was the second consecutive final Gor Mahia failed to exert dominance in, coming after their disappointing end to the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Rwanda in early August.
The regional club championship ended with Gor falling at the final hurdle to eventual champions Rayon Sports FC in a 2-1 scoreline after extra time.
Brewers’ dominance in Super Cup
Meanwhile, the victory saw the Brewers extend their dominance over Gor Mahia in the annual season curtain-raiser. The success marked their fourth trophy in what has been an intriguing rivalry pitting the two sides in the history of the competition. The meeting was the team’s sixth meeting in which Gor Mahia had claimed outright victory on one occasion (2017), and the other four encounters had to be decided on post-match penalties.
Tusker’s previous victorious campaigns via post-match penalty shootouts were in 2012, 2014, and 2021.
