Kamau affirms Mathare United’s ability to beat any opponent ahead of Slum derby test against Kariobangi Sharks
By Luke Oluoch, February 21, 2026Mathare United coach John Kamau has heaped praises on his charges, describing them as a team capable of toppling any top league opposition when playing at their best.
Speaking ahead of their Slum Derby test against rivals Kariobangi Sharks on Saturday, February 21, 2026, the gaffer urged the club to make their preparation count and display winning character in their quest for maximum points.

“The boys showed they can deliver when called upon to, and the challenge is right again before them in the derby. Coming to this game, they are motivated. The only thing is for them to show how much they need the points,” he stated.
A spate of inconsistent outcomes has stunted Slum Boys’ quest in the season, with surprise defeats after convincing displays hampering their quest for improvement and ascending the league ladder.
The tie against Sharks, however, presents a rare chance to stay on the winning side after a convincing 3-1 upset against Tusker FC in their last outing. Kamau sounded the need for the club to show consistency in their games, decrying how they tended to lose their heads in games they approached from comfortable victories.

Kamau also downplayed their dismal run in the fixture, stating that the onus remains on them to string out consistent results and prove they needed the clash more.
“The form is in the past. The dominance against the Sharks means nothing. This is a derby, and inasmuch as our opponents have dominated, we were better last season than them at tenth and them at 14th. We need the points, and we go to fight for the three ahead of us, without giving undue attention to the form.
“My biggest concern is consistency. The best thing we can do as a team is get consistent. The challenge to the boys is, can we get two wins in a row, more than worrying about the tune against the Sharks? I know when we play to our strengths and according to plans, we can beat anyone,” he added.
The encounter will be staged at the Police Sacco grounds from 3:00 pm.
