Hussein Mohammed grilled by Parliament amid FKF’s leadership wrangles

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) leadership on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, held a high-level consultative meeting with the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Sports, Culture and Tourism, in a move aimed at strengthening governance and accelerating preparations for upcoming continental assignments.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed, accompanied by Acting General Secretary and CEO Dennis Gicheru, led the federation delegation. They were joined by members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and officials from the federation’s secretariat.
Hussein grilled
The parliamentary committee, chaired by Dan Wanyama, engaged the FKF leadership in a wide-ranging discussion focusing on the current state and future direction of football in the country. The sitting comes at the moment when the federation is starring at a leadership crisis involving Hussein Mohammed and FKF’s Vice President McDonald Mariga over a purported Ksh42 million 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) insurance scandal.
At the heart of the deliberations were accountability and Kenya’s preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2027, a tournament the country is set to co-host alongside regional partners (Tanzania and Uganda). Lawmakers sought clarity on readiness, infrastructure development, team preparations, and administrative structures required to ensure a successful tournament.

According to the FKF boss, all concerns raised by the committee were comprehensively addressed during the session, with both sides emphasising the need for coordinated efforts to elevate Kenyan football to international standards.
Hussein Mohammed reiterated the federation’s commitment to upholding transparency, integrity, and sound governance practices, noting that these principles remain central to restoring confidence in the management of the sport.
”FKF reaffirms its commitment to transparency, integrity, and good governance as we execute our mandate to develop and advance Kenyan football at all levels. We appreciate the Committee’s oversight role and look forward to continued collaboration for the interest of Kenyan football,” Mohammed said.
Critical oversight
The FKF chief further acknowledged the critical oversight role played by Parliament, welcoming continued scrutiny and guidance from the committee. He expressed optimism that sustained collaboration between stakeholders will be key to unlocking the full potential of Kenyan football.
”There is no doubt that Kenyan football has been on the rise in the last year and we shall continue to build on that success with like minded stakeholders who share our vision of prosperity,” he added.

He has also maintained that he still remains the legitimate FKF President, ignoring the move taken by a section of FKF’s National Executive Committee members to strip him of the powers and install McDonald Mariga as the acting FKF President in April 2026.
“I have not stepped aside I remain the duly elected President of the Football Kenya Federation having been entrusted with this mandate by the democratic will of the FKF membership, I will continue to discharge my responsibilities,” Hussein Mohammed affirmed.
However, as the meeting marks a significant step in aligning football administration with national expectations in and delivering a successful AFCON 2027 campaign both on and off the pitch, Hussein Mohammed has also admitted that the current leadership wrangles at Goal Project could put the AFCON dream into jeopardy.
