How Gor Mahia’s title fever gripped Nyayo Stadium after victory over Murang’a Seal
By Luke Oluoch, May 18, 2026Nyayo Stadium was transformed into a sea of green and white as Gor Mahia fans turned up in a spectacular carnival mood, their belief reaching a fever pitch following a decisive victory over Murang’a Seal.
The electric atmosphere in the afternoon captured exactly what was an early sign of celebration of victory by both the fans and the players. K’Ogalo edged close to reclaiming the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) title, leaving them just ninety minutes away from footballing immortality.
A win in their next match against Mara Sugar will push Gor Mahia to an unassailable 71 points, officially crowning them champions.
Sights and sounds of victory
From the stands to the pitch and the technical bench, the sheer joy of early celebration was vividly captured through the lenses.
Charles Akonnor captured the overall relief and triumph at the final whistle, sharing a warm embrace with his assistant, Kobi Bismarck. While Akonnor has previously warned his charges against popping the champagne too early, Sunday’s tactical masterclass felt like a definitive declaration that the title is firmly within their grasp over the coming weeks.
As the match concluded, players and fans locked arms in an iconic rendition of the Gor Mahia anthem, a powerful engagement that the club, fans, and players have always undertaken after their games.
The squad then embarked on a traditional lap of honour to acknowledge the raucous support. In a moment that sent the crowd into a frenzy, goalkeeper Gad Mathews held high the electronic substitute board with the No. 22 boldly displayed, a clear nod to the record-extending 22nd league title the club is on the verge of sealing.

On the pitch, Shariff Musa was colossal, supplying two assists and scoring one. He and his teammates celebrated in style, engaging directly with the fans who eventually stormed the pitch after the final whistle, perhaps confirming that as far as the K’Ogalo faithful are concerned, the title race is effectively over.
Player reactions
“We knew what we wanted from the game, and we executed the plans as per the coach’s instructions,” Philemon Otieno said after the match.
His defensive partner, Sylvester Owino, was equally ecstatic about the momentum heading into the season’s defining moment. “The big win is crucial going into the next game as we look to win and confirm the championship,” Owino stated. “I want the fans to continue the support; we urge them to continue turning up. We need them all for these final moments,” he added.
Yet, despite the euphoric scenes, the title race remains mathematically alive heading into the final couple of fixtures.
Arch-rivals AFC Leopards are scheduled to face APS Bomet and Bidco United, respectively, while Gor Mahia must navigate their remaining ties against Mara Sugar and Nairobi United to officially determine who gets crowned the new FKF Premier League champions.
However, with fate out of their hands, Fred Ambani’s title challengers can only hope that Gor now drops crucial points to stand any chance of upending their inevitable march.
