Gor Mahia outsmart Murang’a Seal to inch closer to FKF PL glory

Gor Mahia have moved a step closer to clinching the 2025/26 Football Kenya Premier League title after outsmarting Murang’a Seal 3-1 at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Samuel Kapen, Shariff Musa, and substitute Ebenezer Asifuah secured the club’s 20th league victory. With the win, Charles Akonnor’s lads restored a four-point gap between themselves and second-placed AFC Leopards with just two games left in the season.

Gor Mahia’s impressive campaign keeps them ahead of Leopards, who currently have 19 wins, seven draws, and six defeats from their 32 matches.

K’Ogalo also holds a superior goal-scoring record, netting 50 goals compared to Ingwe’s 42, which could prove decisive if goal difference comes into play to settle this tense and nervy title race.

Kapen opener, Joe levels

Samuel Kapen gave the title chasers a dream start, opening the scoring after 18 minutes with an expertly taken lob. The attacker’s strike marked his first goal since finding the net against KCB over a month ago. However, the upbeat mood at Nyayo Stadium was short-lived; Murang’a Seal’s in-form forward and FKF-PL leading marksman, Joe Waithira, pulled the visitors level just minutes later.

Kapen had a golden opportunity to restore Gor’s lead before the break but uncharacteristically tapped the ball over the crossbar with the net gaping.

The delicately poised game took a sudden turn seven minutes into the second half when Gor Mahia reclaimed the advantage. An impressive Shariff Musa got in on the act, delivering a brilliantly taken goal to make it 2-1.

Substitute Ebenezer Asifuah then showcased his clinical efficiency off the bench, striking K’Ogalo’s third with only a quarter of the match left to play, effectively putting the game to bed.

Title race finale

Title rivals AFC Leopards had temporarily stretched the tense scramble for the 2026 championship into the final two matchdays after edging Kakamega Homeboyz 2-1 on Saturday, May 16, at the Mumias Sports Complex. That victory had piled intense pressure on K’Ogalo, who entered their Sunday fixture sitting precariously just a single point above their arch-rivals.

This 3-1 victory marks the most critical win of the season for Charles Akonnor’s side, who can now officially wrap up the title race with a victory in their next match.

The upcoming penultimate round of fixtures will set the stage before the final, potentially explosive curtain-closer scheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2026.
